School taught us two things:
- Finish tasks given by others.
- Let others grade how you are doing, and decide what’s wrong or right.
This usually leads people to:
-
Prioritize goals imposed by others over our own interests and instincts.
-
Seek approval and validation from others.
-
Defer decisions to authority figures - employers, experts, social norms.
-
Overthinking: not trusting ones own instincts and judgments, always looking for confirmation.
Example:
- Asking on internet: is it weird to do X?
- I think she likes me, but wait, does she like me? Probably best to look for more indicator of interests.
-
Fear of making mistakes, Perfectionism
Playing it safe, fear of facing disapproval from friends, colleagues, strangers.
In conclusion, schools excel at:
- Preventing people from critical thinking, making people vulnerable to manipulation.
- Reinforcing the habit of not questioning, but to find the “standard answer”.
Which is exactly what is needed to provide society with cannon fodders, drone workers and non-root issue social distraction justice warrior.
So what? How to gain back autonomy?
We could write many articles for each point, but generally:
-
Always Question Your Assumed Truth
A belief is an assumed truth. Truth does not hurt, what hurts is living a truth that never existed.
-
Trust your own judgment
How? Make Mistakes, Learn from it, the more you rely on your own decisions, the more confident you will become in yourself.
If you think these things make you uncomfortable, you need to know:
- Getting out of your comfort zone also makes you uncomfortable.
- No one is going to save you, and no one is going to do it for you.
Get comfortable being uncomfortable, because that’s probably when you grow as a person.
In other words, if you want to take responsibility of your own life, take responsibility of your own life.
